My head canon is that Snoke may have beaten him, and that this is a learned behavior. Sort of like how he dodged the lightsaber in the throne room scene, during the interrogation.
I mean, look at Hux and his upbringing – physical violence and abuse is sort of a training go-to standard amongst the ranks of the First Order. Even though Ben was an adult, the use of tactics like these is not something I would find surprising.
