WUFF… Chapter Eighteen is finally done.

It’s over 17K words, and I’d wager easily 12K of it is Kylo Ren.  This is a big chapter for him.  And this is finally a Reylo fic in this chapter.  The pilot light has been lit under this slow burn.

But BOY do I have an editing job ahead of me.  I hope I don’t hate what I read tomorrow, LOL.  Then off to beta!  It’ll drop just in time for the weekend =)

Final ReyloWriMo Update

It’s almost 11pm on 11/30 and I’m so sleepy I cannot write anymore. But by god, I’m only 500 words shy of the 30K soft goal I set for myself for ReyloWriMo on The Machine.

I knew I’d never hit 50K. But I’m proud of the work I did.

Chapter Eighteen is still not finished, but should be done sometime next week. =)  It’s huge and hugely important, and has sucked up a large fraction of my brain cells this month, LOL.  I hope you guys enjoy it!!!

ReyloWriMo Update 11/27/2018

Hit the 24,000 word mark tonight on Chapter Eighteen.  Slow but steady.  Still hoping to hit the 30K soft cap by the end of the week.  

95% of the 8K words in this chapter so far are ALL Kylo Ren.  This is the longest I’ve spent on his POV, and it wasn’t intentional.  I meant to spend a little time focusing on the plot, with Poe and Finn and Maz.  And I meant to write at least half of this dialogue through Rey’s eyes, but I really wanted to give their budding feelings the authenticity they deserved because I truly believe the enemies-to-lovers trope is a very difficult one to pull off in a manner that feels “real” to the reader, especially given the context of these characters and their motivations.

I felt that Rey’s POV was too close to the reader’s POV, and ultimately felt too much like speculation, or too much like author injection.  Like fangirly fan service, lol.  And this fic is ready to move past speculation.  So I’m writing what it’s like to develop romantic feelings from the POV of an absolutely terrified male.  One who has already been spurned by this woman once before by his own shamefully woeful lack of… tact, lol.  

And it’s as fitting as it is fascinating.  The move toward a deeper, more intimate connection is being told through the POV of someone who battles obvious mental illness.  It’s being told through the POV of someone who is a survivor of abuse.  

It’s being told through the POV of someone who battles crippling anxiety.  Which is good, because I am feeling an absolute shit ton of anxiety about writing this fic’s first real glimpse into finally changing the relationship between these two characters into something deeper and more romantic.  This can really go only one of two ways – cheesy and wrong…. or right on the nose.  There’s a lot of pressure here to swing and not miss – to get the tone right, to keep the pace slow and cautious – so it’s like a self-fulfilling prophecy.  I’m anxiously writing anxiety… with anxiety.

ReyloWriMo Update 11/25/18

I’m at 22K words now, and I have PRECIOUS FEW DAYS to even meet my soft goal of 30K words.  This has been really quite difficult, but a good exercise for me, nonetheless.  I at least have learned what I’ve done wrong, LOL.

Like tonight!!!!  I spent the bulk of my time tonight doing the one thing I promised myself I wasn’t going to do – editing and rewriting.  But I HATED what I wrote the other day.  It was ridiculous, and it’s much better now.  And at least 5K words of Chapter Eighteen is one dialogue between Omar and Kylo Ren that took me by surprise and was quite nice to write.  Omar’s “dad game” is strong in this one.

And now I’m beginning the second half of the chapter, which I’m hoping will be a lovely Reylo dialogue, but I find their alone moments to be VERY intimidating.  They’re kind of the whole point, they HAVE to be done well, and in a very particular way or they won’t feel right.  So… I anticipate a whole bunch of new edits and rewrites that will negatively impact my continuing word count.  

Also, is it weird I’m going to miss this challenge when it’s done?  You’ve been doing a great job, folks at @reylowrimo!!!
